meet Joe...
I love sitting in my backyard, it has a peaceful quality and faces this great wooded easement that eventually leads to the Tookany Creek. I pretend I don't hear the sirens, Septa and helicopter thuds of Philly from blocks away. I'm always tending to the herbal and perennial gardens, noting that half off the plants have been eaten away!
When I moved here, my neighbors told me about tons of animals. Most of my neighbors moved out of Philly to the burbs and were amazed by the deer, groundhogs, raccoons...and even wild turkeys. I thought they were telling stories and soon enough I started to see more wildlife then I had expected in this neck of the woods.
This year has been different though, the animals seem to be a little too comfortable around our place. We have a raccoon, Rocco, that hangs out, if you're outside at night he likes to sit on the edge of the fence and just observe, he's quite comical.
So last week when I was outside in the early evening, on the phone, I saw two little heads pop out from behind a bush and staring at me. They were very cute and positioned so all you could see was their heads. They kept looking "is it safe?" From that day the daily event of the deer have become amusing, almost pet like, as they tend to eating the columbine, mint, fever few and wild Japanese knotwood that's invaded this area. Each day I've seen the comfort zone increase.
Over the past week while I worked on the yard, I had that sense of someone watching me, and I was being watched by "Joe" as we named him. Beautiful young buck with buds and a scar on his side. He's now become so acquainted with us that each day when I go to work on the yard, he joins me. I can walk around, go in the house, water, weed, etc and he just hangs out. I guess his nibbling helps keep some yard work in control!

Road Trip: Kutztown Folk Festival
Ah the good ole Kutztown Folk Festival, the place where if you lived in the area, at some point in time you worked there! I was one of the many teens who spent a week of their summer working at the festival, the fudge stand to be exact, maybe that's why I'm not a fan of fudge.
I spent my childhood in Moselem Springs and later years in Kutztown, a quiet college town that is close knit and still has the old small town feel. My family and I went this past weekend and had fun being with old friends and doing a comparison of our life in the Philly burbs to "mom I can't believe you grew up around this". We also spent some time with family and visited my cousin's new home which has a glorious view overlooking Kutztown.
The Festival runs through July 5th, so gas up the car and take a little trip to enjoy life in all its simplicity. While the festival might be ending soon...there are plenty of talented artists from the area listed on the Road Trip toolbar! Enjoy!

who's your muse???
I have been inspired by nature in a lot of the work that I do yet I confess when it comes to painting and mixed media my Chief is my muse. Now sometimes this has produced some interesting dark work and more often over the years has prompted a creative explosion that comes across in ways that I seem to have no control and I can actually stop, say finish and enjoy what has developed.
This is what he has inspired in me through the three hours of time difference.

Appropriately titled "three hours" is mixed media of many layers of handmade papers, found paper, lots and lots of acrylics and gel mediums. The painting is difficult to photograph, at least for me, to truly catch the way light is caught in the painting and creates a lot of depth and texture. Close up:
